City of Pembroke Pines
Implementation Plans
FY 2024-2025 Plan
The City of Pembroke Pines has developed a funding plan for the allocation of Opioid Settlement Funds, aimed at addressing the opioid crisis, which has significantly impacted Broward County and resulted in thousands of overdose deaths in recent years. The plan outlines a comprehensive strategy focusing on prevention, treatment, support, and recovery services, including expanding training for first responders, funding media campaigns to prevent opioid use, increasing the availability of Naloxone, and supporting recovery services.
This initiative is part of a broader settlement in which Florida, along with its subdivisions, will receive over $3.2 billion over 17 years from corporations implicated in the opioid epidemic, with Broward County receiving approximately $80 million of this amount. The City of Pembroke Pines has been allocated $116,000 for FY2025, with expectations of receiving an additional $1.5 million over the next fifteen years, contributing to a total of $1,955,867 from the settlement.
The plan for the fiscal year 2025 includes start-up funding for new programs, one-time funds for some initiatives, and ongoing costs for others, with a focus on monitoring performance and outcomes to guide future planning and adjustments. Eligible expenditure categories for the settlement funds have been outlined in an agreement, emphasizing opioid remediation activities such as treating opioid use disorder, preventing over-prescribing and misuse, and supporting affected individuals and families.
The plan recommends specific allocations for collaborative strategic planning, training for first responders, prevention programs, distribution of Naloxone, and support for people in treatment and recovery, totaling $400,000 in planned spending. The City of Pembroke Pines aims to implement the funding plan transparently and equitably, with a commitment to community engagement and the establishment of an advisory group to provide input.
The plan’s long-term design and focus on measuring the impact of investments are intended to allow for future planning adjustments, enhancing program commitments and capitalizing on emerging policy and funding opportunities. This approach reflects a dedicated effort to address the opioid crisis and its devastating effects on the community through strategic use of the settlement funds.
